“As I child I was fairly active and participated in sports such as basketball and track & field. My first experience with fitness was when I was 16 years old. I joined a local gym and discovered group fitness classes, weight lifting and cardio machines! I loved both the physical and mental benefits of working out and being active and stuck with it even after moving to Edmonton for school. After being in 2 seperate motor vehicle accidents in 2003 & 2009 that my physical and emotional world turned upside down. I struggled with maintaining my high-impact fitness routine that I had come to love. I had a particular difficult time after my 2nd accident, as it was quite severe. It was as if someone had put a pencil in my hamster wheel. I found it hard to even do the simplest exercises that my physical therapist gave me. Even going for a short daily walk was difficult, and frankly I found it boring. I was in so much pain all of the time and I started to resent my body. I fell into a deep depression and stayed there for many months. It was in January 2010 that I discovered Zumba® Fitness. A friend had asked me to try out a “new and fun” class at the gym I had belonged to. I was still in a very negative mindset when it came to the gym, so I was very hesitant. But I was desperate for something fun, as working out was no longer enjoyable for me, just painful. After the 1st class, I felt a bit insecure, but I also felt a desire to go back. I soon became addicted to the music, the energy in the room and the enthusiasm of the instructor. I loved the fact that I could move the way my body moved–despite my limitations–and I was never judged. I found that the more I ‘let go’ and embrace the way that I moved, the more fun I had. I decided to become a licensed Zumba® Fitness instructor in May 2010, the day before I moved back to Medicine Hat from Edmonton. I immediately connected with Marla at Heartbreaker Dance & Fitness and started teaching Zumba® Fitness classes in Fall 2010. Soon after I became a Heartbreaker instructor I met my best friend Jamie Sawatzky, who was a participant in my classes. I noticed her love and enthusiasm for Zumba®, so Marla and I encouraged her to become a licensed instructor in 2011. In addition to Zumba® Fitness and Zumba® Kids classes at Heartbreaker, I also teach Aqua Zumba® classes at the Crestwood Recreation Centre and Zumba® Gold classes at various locations in Medicine Hat every week! Come join me at Heartbreaker Dance & Fitness and experience this incredibly empowering and fun workout! “Ditch the workout, join the party!™”
